Multiplayer Minecraft Pi (finally)

WP_20160225_09_36_07_Pro_LISo last week I finally discovered how to get a multiplayer game of Minecraft going on the Raspberry Pi and it was a lot simpler than what I had been trying. Seems all you need to do is connect your pi’s to a router and well that’s it really. The pi’s need an IP address in order to have a LAN game and by using any router (no internet connection is needed just the router) you can then get them talking to each other.

HOWEVER this does only work for 5 WP_20160223_10_02_06_Pro_LIpi’s connected on the same network. I used a router and a switch to enable me to have the 5 pi’s on at the same time. I tried to add more but it seems that 5 is the maximum you can have on a pi multiplayer game. I wish I had discovered this months ago however at least I know now.

Time to get Glasgows children Game Jamming (Mini Style)

Alice David Luke MikeWell it’s that time of year again everyone. Mini Game Jam will soon be upon us again and this post is a call for help.

My Jam has been growing slowly over the past couple of years and I am now in year 4 of it. With support from Glasgow City Council Education Services 10 Learning Communities across the city will be taking part with their associated primary schools and I am super excited about this. Winners from each Learning Community will go on to a final on the 7th June!


I am looking for volunteers who are interested in helping encouraging children with their game ideas and supporting the on the day,  no prior knowledge of Scratch programming is necessary (I can provide some training on it). The event runs from 9.30am until 2.30pm.  If you can help me please contact me direct

Playing the name game.

If I were to say to you who is Daniel Middleton, Jordan Maron, Adam Dahlberg, Tiffany Herrera, Thomas, Beth Bates, David Spencer and Joseph Garrett would you think I was rambling on about a list of people I know?

Would you know them?

OK how about if I say The Diamond Minecart (DanTDM, CaptainSparklez, SkyDoesMinecraft, Ihascupquake, Choochoosgaming, Sqaisheyquack, Iballisticsqud and Stampyylonghead?

Any clearer now?

Who are all these folk?

There are of course YouTubers who have amassed billions of views on their channels and why?


Yes Minecraft that lovely blocky sandbox game,20141113_161325 they all make videos around Minecraft whether it’s gameplay, modding, tips or tricks or even parody music videos these are some of the folk children are watching and talking about. Given all the attention Minecraft is getting at the moment I decided to do a little more research on YouTube and with the help of my daughters (who better to learn from) I discovered more to Minecraft videos than just Stampy and DanTDM. Stampy works with a few folk iBalisticSquid being one of them – they have build challenges a 15 minute section where their followers suggest something for them to build and both take on the challenge with viewers watching one channel or the other. Viewers then vote on who did the best build. The also do quests together amongst other things. Another regular with Stampy is Sqaisheyquack who is a Minecraft helper in Stampys Lovely world but also has her own gaming channel on YouTube too. Others include AmyLee33 and AshDubh. Stampy also has an educational channel as well now called WonderQuest.

ChooChoosgaming is a channel run by Thomas (no full name given) and he uploads regular videos about games he likes to play including Minecraft. iHasCupQuake run by Tiffany Herrera is a channel for all things geek. She covers games, baking and all things creative. SkyDoesMinecraft is another popular channel with over 11 million subscribers waiting patiently for those Minecraft video uploads. Most YouTubers videos are uploaded on a regular basis with the norm being that they are uploading new material on a daily basis. You only have to look at the number of views on their channels to see just how popular they are!

OK so how is this relevant then? Given that Minecraft is so popular just now then why not tap into resources already there? Well as someone who has done some teaching with Minecraft this is another way to get started in the class. What better than to discuss or write about our favourite YouTube personality and look at the work they produce? How about some maths YouTube provide lots of information (number of subscribers/channel views/videos etc) How about making their own Minecraft video in the style of their favourite YouTuber or even just making their own videos? Or artwork on squared paper in the style of Minecraft. Even if you don’t have Minecraft on your computers in school there are still ways that you can use it to inspire children’s’ learning.

Maybe even before the learning in class just learn more about what the children are watching – it’s certainly opened my eyes. Ask the children who they watch and why, then go home and do that yourself. Nothing wrong with admitting to the children you don’t know who x,y or z are but don’t be afraid to learn more about x,y or z that’s how I’ve just spent my weekend.

My busy 2015

While I’m now starting to get back to sorting out what I’m getting up to this year I decided to have a wee look back at all I managed to get to do in 2015 which it turned out was actually quite a lot. I had lots of fun and new experiences and got to work with lots of fabulous folk. So here a roundup of my 2015 (in no particular order):

I passed my level 3 City and Guilds Education and Training Qualification after completing quite a few night classes (CPD which I have greatly benefited from).

I passed my Drivers theory test (albeit 2nd time lucky). I’ve been taking driving lessons for we while now (yes I have failed the test once but fingers crossed for next time) for my poor instructors sake – the guy is a legend well he must be he’s still alive after having me as a student for so long!!!

I became a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert for 2016.

Spoke at the Raspberry Pi day in Glasgow about my Computing Club in Royston Primary School. I even got a really nice write up about my talk as well.

I helped facilitate a Minecraft workshop for girls at the Ada Lovelace event organised by the University of the West of Scotland.

I’m running a class in school as part of the Build it Scotland project using Minecraft on the Raspberry Pi to build Scottish landmarks AND I got to be on the BBC website eek! Here’s me and the kids I’m working with talking about it

I ran my Computing club in Royston Primary for the year – between Jan 2015 and June 2015 I had 3 clubs running and then from Aug 2015 to Dec 2015 I have sadly due to work commitments had to stick to 1 club running.20150616_143708

I mentored a team into the final of the Scottish KoduKup as part of my club in school.

I was part of the organising committee for the Computing at School Scotland conference in Dundee (helped out more on the day than beforehand – my timing was awesome arriving at the venue the night before just in time for pizza!!).

I spoke at a TeachMeet event in Glasgow (even finally got to meet the legend that is Ian Stuart) – twice actually about the work I’ve done with Scratch and also the work I’ve done in Royston Primary.

St. Brigids Primary in Glasgow invited me along to talk about careers in games for their careers networking event – cool as I got my pic in the local paper and was described by one child as the best person there.CU0n0O6W4AACqMp

Got to work with a group of pupils from a cluster of Secondary schools on app development as part of a larger project which will be continuing again soon.

I ran some CPD sessions for teachers to teach them about making games with Scratch in order for them to get their children ready to participate in the Mini Game Jams.

I organised 5 Mini Game Jams across Glasgow and co –organised 1 with the Caledonian Club at Glasgow Caledonian University which in total had 305 children participate in making games with Scratch for a day.

I advised on a Mini Game Jam that was held at The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment in California.

imageThe thesis has now been submitted– yes the force was finally with me and I finished it (did you just hear a whole load of folk go thank goodness for that – well I’m being polite the probably said worse they know who they are and thanks for sticking by me). 2016 will be year of the Viva!!

Oh yeah did I say I do work part time lecturing (a couple of places) and I’m mum to 3 very wonderful and understanding girls who know that all the work I do during the year is for their benefit as well and due to the nature of my jobs I’m super lucky enough to spend the holidays with them and maybe make the occasional Lego model!!

Looking forward to taking on 2016 and hopefully some new projects as well as the ones already in the planning.

So how do we fix this games/computing gender problem?

I posted a short reply to a post on facebook earlier by David Renton on how to get more women into games courses and wanted to compose this post in order to elaborate further. So how do we solve the problem then of getting more girls into games or even computing in an ideal world we stop genderising things whether they are toys, jobs even hobbies. It won’t happen overnight or even at all however it’s a start right?

OK so it’s not the ideal world how can we help change the notion that Computing & Games are for boys. I’m using these since that’s my specific area however I’m sure there will more subject examples dominated by one or the other gender and seen to be girly/boyish. Education I believe plays a part in this and helping demystify some stereotypes. I have for 6 years been researching in primary schools and I firmly believe this is where we need to start. Children learn from an early age and they learn from us. It’s our responsibility as adults to show them the opportunities out there and to show that no matter their gender they can do anything. So why don’t we teach them then how to make games in schools (yes it’s part of our Scottish school curriculum from Primary 5 onwards) and it’s been on my radar for the past 6 years. I’ve been trying on my own to get more children in Glasgow (there are other folk doing fab things across the country) into games by teaching them how to make games using Scratch – in school lessons I should add.  My research focused on working with nearly 400 children between the ages of 8-11 and teaching them and their teachers how to make games. The children worked in pairs and not once did I ever hear/see anything gender related towards the games that were produced. The only gender issue I encountered was a couple of P6 or 7 classes who when told they would be working in mixed gender pairs gave the ever so awkward pre-teen look of how can I work with a boy/girl but after 2 minutes that was forgotten about and awesome games were soon made.

Primary is a very important stage of education as it forms children’s opinions on subjects they like and dislike. By giving children positive experiences of games construction & computing in general. However this then needs to be reinforced throughout secondary school also and children need to be able to have the opportunity to carry on seamlessly from primary to secondary. This is where I had the idea of an event that lets primary and secondary schools work together. A Mini Game Jam – a game jam is where folk get together for 48 hours in the one space and form a team and well, make a game. My idea was shrunk down for the school day. I envisaged that after teaching the children during my research they would have some game making knowledge – enough to make a small game – to be able to work in a team and have some fun while doing so. Hence the Mini Game Jam was born. I am now into year 4 of the event which schools are now starting to see the benefits of. Last year I worked with 300 children over 6 events to spend a day working on a game based on a given theme. By putting the children into mixed teams and not making a fuss about it they worked together side by side as it should be. By showing primary and secondary schools how both can work together for one little part of the curriculum it might help sow some seeds.

Given what I’ve seen during my years of research in schools I don’t believe solely in “women into x, y or z” events. However they may be a short term fix but we need to think long term for these ideas to stick. Also OK why not women only classes for getting more women thinking about the subject I dont mean full on the whole 4 years or that but getting an introduction would maybe be helpful. I chose my subject at university knowing that yes it would probably be male dominated but at the end of the day my choice was based on what I wanted to learn not the male/female ratio in the class.

There isn’t an overnight “Women into “ course and suddenly uptake of FE/HE even Nationals/Highers goes through the roof, no this is a long road and we all must be in it together to work and change attitudes from early years onwards otherwise we will still be having this same old conversation in 20-30 years time.

And the Winners of the Mini Game Jam 2015 are …

Finally time for the final. 13 teams from 17 schools across Glasgow (& 1 team from Fife) gathered at Glasgow Clyde College on the 17th June 2015 to participate in the jam final. After a brief introduction the children moved into the design room – a room we set up so that the children could focus on getting their ideas down on paper before moving to the computer room. The children had been told beforehand what the theme was going to be for the jam – Glasgow City of Science. So that they could do some research and get ideas for their games. This meant that when they got into their teams they could share what they had brought with them and together come up with their game ideas. The children spent around 30 minutes planning their games before we moved into the computing room.





The bonus of being in the college was we had use of a large lab which meant all teams got to be in the same room. It meant they weren’t split across rooms and it was easy for the helpers to then see everyone during the day. The room was buzzing with excited children working hard on their games and discussing their plans. Some teams were heard having discussions about the use of imported images with one of them telling their team members they felt that it was wrong to be using other pictures and that they should be creating their own for their games. This is something I do try and encourage children when using Scratch be creative don’t just simply use the standard images or download pictures – make your own, put your stamp on your game.

After the lunch break the race was on for teams to get their games finished and working. Sometimes this was the frustrating part for teams they’d get one thing working and break something else however persistence pays off for those who keep on trying. In the end the team of judges had to work hard to decide who was going to win. The games were judged on how relevant to the theme they were, complexity and functionality. We still looked at how teams worked as well overall. Both the teams who were runner up and winning had great dynamics within their teams and that showed all day.

The winning team was a team of 3 from Rosshall Academy and Sandwood Primary their game is about Clyde collecting science items (though he has to avoid the Bunsen burners) and can be played here.

The runners up game was created by a team of 4 from Alexandra Parade Primary and Sunnyside Primary. Their game is about a mouse in a lab and you have to navigate the mouse through the lab to get the cheese and can be played here.

Well done to everyone who participated on the day though they all put in a great amount of effort and made it hard to make that final choice.

Mini Game Jam Month

During May 2015 306 children from 22 schools across Glasgow participated in a series of Mini Game Jam events. The Mini Game Jam is an event for children who are in P6/7 & S1/2 and it involves schools within the same learning community getting their classes of P6 or 7 together and heading to the local secondary school to work with a class of S1 or S2 there to make a game using Scratch. The children are put into teams with children from the other schools in order to give a transition style event as well. While the main aim of the day is to create a game based on the theme given at the start of the day it’s about a little more than that. It’s about training teachers beforehand to give their classes scratch lessons so they are able to have an idea of how to create a game. It’s about giving the teachers confidence in their own abilities to teach games design/construction to their classes in school. It’s about encouraging children to work in teams and learn from each other. It’s about getting the schools in a learning community to undertake similar Computing work at the same time. It’s about showing children then can be the creators of their own games and not just consumers. It’s about letting children see there are careers available to them in the games industry (I am lucky enough to get volunteers to help and encourage the children on the day who are involved in games either as students/lecturers or who work for a games company). Most importantly it’s about the children having a FUN day while making new friends and being part of a team that’s created a cool game within the space of 3 or 4 hours.
